Gaylord Chan
Gaylord Chan (1925 – 2020)
1968-70 Studying a Certificate in Fundamental Studies for Art and Design (Special studies in Fine Art) at the Department of Extra Mural Studies, University of Hong Kong.
1970 Serving as the founding chairman of the Cable & Wireless Limited Non-Expatriate Staff Association.
1974 Co-founded the Hong Kong Visual Art Society (VAS) with fellow graduates of the HKU Extra Mural Studies Certificate course and chaired the Society for the first four formative years.
1978 Awarded life membership by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. INC (MIEEE)
1983 Awarded the Urban Council Fine Arts Award.
1986 Awarded Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions in the telecommunications field.
1989 Founded the Culture Corner Art Academy with Josephine Chow Suk Fan in Tai Po Plaza.
1991 Awarded “Painter of the Year 1990” by the Hong Artists’ Guild and Urban Council.
1993-2020 Serving as Museum Expert Advisor to the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
1995 Founded the Artmatch Group with his students and served as the Group’s first Chairman.
1998 Awarded the Hong Kong Visual Arts Society Silver Jubilee Award.
The colored metal plate artwork “Swift and Safe” commissioned by the Hong Kong MTR and sponsored by Heng Seng Bank, installed at the Airport Express Railway Hong Kong Station.
2009 Awarded a Distinguished Alumni Fellowship by HKU SPACE.
2012 Designed a set of 12 Flags commissioned by M+ are installed at West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre.
2013 Awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) by the Hong Kong SAR Government for his outstanding achievement and valuable contribution to the creation of art and art education.
2018 Designed a set of 6 flags commissioned by Tai Kwun Contemporary, the flags were displayed as public art in the Tai Kwun.
2019 Awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Hong Kong Arts Centre.
