19/9-2/11/2024
1. Venue
Ground floor multipurpose space at HART Haus, Cheung Hing Industrial Building, 12P Smithfield Road, Kennedy Town, Hong Kong.
2. Significance of the exhibition
The exhibition is concurrent to the retrospective exhibition of Gaylord Chan held in the Asia Society, Hong Kong Center from 19 June 2024 to 2 February 2025. Gaylord Chan's art career started in his mid-forties. He endeavored to produce a much-admired oeuvre comprising paintings, digital art and flag art which drew viewers' reverie. As a tribute paid to the inspiring master, the Artmatch Group creates an icosahedron (20 faces polyhedron) at the ground floor shopfront to echo the colourful world of Gaylord.
3. Details of the artwork
Gaylord Chan’s flag art was first exhibited at the West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre in 2012, carrying a strong visual communication in the later part of his oeuvre, being colourful, bright and symbolic of power and victory. The icosahedron presents Artmatch as a unified group, containing 18 pieces of the members' paper flag in triangular form, each measuring 0.7m x 0.7m x 0.7m with an overall assembly size of approximately 1.4 metres in height and width. LED lights frame the polyhedron while the mirror walls on three sides dramatize the effect of multiplying the art forces in space. Just as much as Gaylord had used metallic paint in his work, the artists use fluorescent paints to bring a glowing effect to the object as it rotates gracefully in the room. The whole ceiling is fluttered with Gaylord's mini-sized paper flags to create an ambience of victory and festivity. The artists include An Gee Chan, Bernard Lim, Betty Lam, David Tsang, Danny Lee, Emil Wong, Eileen Yeung, Graca Wong, Hilarie Hon, Ivan Ho, Jennifer Tong, Josephine Chow, Justin Larkin, Rosa Lok, Steve Chan, Suk Man Siu, Spencer Luk and Terry Lee.
4. Production process
Since November 2023, a dedicated group was set up to attend to details of fabricating the icosahedron and site installation to ensure smooth sailing. The Artmatch Group is most thankful of the assistance rendered by the students and teacher of the STEAM Team of Shun Tak Fraternal Association Cheng Yu Tung Secondary School in working out and 3-D printing the structural frame of the icosahedron, which is the quintessential of the art piece in this exhibition. In addition, without the support of the construction team of the Harvest Century Holdings (HK) Ltd, the Artmatch Group could not possibly have completed the site installation within a short span of three days.
